One split second after tossing my stuff down, without bending my knees, I felt a shift in my lower back and collapsed to the floor. A herniated disc will immobilize you quicker than a bolt of lightning through the sky. I felt the immediate pain and frustration of getting sloppy with the basics. My inner voice reminded me of everything I had been told. Bend your knees and use your legs not your back when you place anything on the floor. The basics of life are simple, but if ignored they will immobilize you from completing the basic tasks in life.
Laying on the floor in excruciating pain is the most humbling way to reevaluate the basics of life. Nothing will send you to an evaluation crisis like a traumatic event.
Questions formed in my head like…
How could I have done something so stupid?
What am I going to do now?
Who is going to lecture me after they find out?
When is the pain going to end?
I quickly decided that I needed to sharpen the basics of life.
Physical – Invest in caring for our bodies. Since no one else will do this for us, we have to be proactive to make it a priority.
Spiritual- Make prayer a daily habit. Prayer is simply talking to God and is so powerful! I love David O. McKay’s words, “The greatest battles of life are fought out daily in the silent chambers of the soul.”
Mental – Reading and writing sharpens and expands the mind. I love to journal! Journaling allows me to release negative thoughts and emotions.
Social/Emotional- This is developed out of your relationship with others. Recognize and cultivate positive relationships. We all need each other.
If we neglect any one area, it will negatively affect all the others.
Spring is the season of renewal. I invite you my friend, along with me, to commit to making this season of your life to simply get back to basics.
