Hello Gorgeous!
We’re a year into the pandemic and wearing a mask has become our norm. Many of you struggle with breakouts from wearing a mask for extended periods of time. The reason this happens is because wearing a mask creates a warm, moist environment that erodes our skin barrier function. Without an intact barrier we are set-up for bacteria to invade and create pimples. Maskne is a real nuisance for us all…but fear not, my friend, here’s how to minimize maskne:
If wearing a fabric mask, make sure it’s cleaned every day (preferably in detergents that are free of fragrance and dyes and skip the dryer sheets). Some fabrics are more irritating than others, like polyester. Choose a gentle fabric, like cotton to be closest to the skin. Disposable masks are meant to be disposed of. Do not re-use.
Skip the full-coverage foundation and other types of makeup that are pore clogging. If you have to wear makeup, use only those that are labeled non-comedogenic. Lipsticks and glosses are culprits too. Use vaseline or aquaphor on your lips instead.
Wash your face twice daily. If your skin barrier is already disrupted, rinse with water in the morning and use a gentle cleanser at night.
Moisturizer is a must for all skin types. It creates a barrier. Apply it after you wash, before putting on the mask, and at night. If you are acne prone, try a gel based moisturizer.
Do not try new skincare products. Less is best. You never know how your skin will react to new products. It’s best to stick to tried and true when you have to wear a mask all the time.
