More Miles, More Calories?

Running burns an impressive number of calories. However, as a runner, we need to be aware of our calories we eat even when we are running more miles than usual. I often fall into the thought “I can eat that; I’ll burn it off” but in reality that is not how our bodies are programmed. Right now, I am in the highest mileage numbers for marathon training. I feel and want to eat everything! In fact, it’s hard to resist a pancake, French toast, licorice, and other sugar-packed items. Does running give me a pass to eat what I want? Nooooooo, it doesn’t. So, my point is to be careful with this thinking. Our bodies process sugar in a very different way rather than a simple equation of calories in and calories out. Now, to be clear running does require more calorie intake at times. Remember to follow a nutrition plan that works for you such as a mix of protein and carbs in small snacks throughout the day. Always allow yourself one indulgence meal but don’t fall into the trap. Running doesn’t mean you can eat what you want, your diet matters no matter how much exercise you do each week!
