Pores

Hello Gorgeous!

I cannot tell you how many people come into my office complaining about their large pores. They want to know how they can shrink them and make them less noticeable. I even see advertisements claiming if you use product X, it will shrink your pores. Or if you use steam it’ll open your pores up and if you use cold compresses it’ll shrink your pores. Lies! Here’s the deal…pores do not open and close, like a door. Your pore size is your pore size.

I know there are those of you that will say, “But my pores weren’t this big when I was younger!” Let me explain. Unfortunately, as we age, our pores appear larger because of collagen loss. As we lose collagen, our skin becomes less firm and taut. Gravity takes hold, our skin begins to sag and (PRESTO!) your pores appear larger as the skin stretches. Ohhh the joys of getting older!!!

Another way our pores appear enlarged is when we aren’t cleansing our skin well enough. When our pores become clogged with dirt, oil and products it only enhances the look of our pore size.

Even though we can’t change pore size, the good news is we can minimize the “appearance” of large pores. Here’s how:

  1. Cleanse the face twice day

  2. Avoid touching your face (which adds oil and dirt to our skin)

  3. Exfoliate your skin (once or twice a week)

  4. Professional chemical peels

  5. Retinol (to increase cellular turnover and increase collagen production)

  6. Broad-spectrum sunscreen (every day) to minimize damage which causes collagen loss

  7. Microneedling, AKA Collagen Induction Therapy (performed by a professional, not the at-home type instruments)

I hope you find these tips helpful.
