Running is way to soothe our minds and exercise, but racing is whole different mindset. Racing is not only about having a physical aspect but a mental one as well. I remember my first race and I think back to all the preparation and energy spent on it. It was a 5K! I was so excited about running this race and I prepared for weeks! I ran the distance several times, I even ran over three miles to ensure I was ready. I had done all the rituals before including picking up my packet, laying out my race clothes, and eating pasta the night before. It was so exciting to be part of the race. I was very nervous at the start line and I could feel the adrenaline pumping through my body. Once the race started I fell into a rhythm and started to enjoy the race. I remembered thinking that the 3.1 miles felt really long but as finally my nerves settled and I erased each mile. I ran in a rhythm and it felt natural in terms of my breathing. The run was just as I had practiced! It was very exciting to hear the crowd as I rounded the last corner and although it was a small crowd I remember many smiling faces and clapping. I felt very accomplished by running across that finish line and really enjoyed the racing experience. Racing is not for everyone but it’s a change in pace for training, so I encourage you to sign up for a race in the near future!
