Hello Gorgeous!
Have I ever told you why I call this blog “Hello Gorgeous”? My husband (of 26 years) greets me with “hello gorgeous” every day when he comes home. He always makes me feel beautiful and tells me regularly that he thinks I’m beautiful. But sometimes, ladies…I do not feel beautiful. And it may not even be appearance related. Sometimes I just don’t feel like my best self. Does anyone else ever feel that way?
Yesterday, I had a patient in my office that told me, “I can’t stand to look at myself in the mirror.” That broke my heart. No one should feel that way about themselves. She went on to tell me that her husband doesn’t understand. Her husband thinks that “looking” older is part of the natural course of aging. She understands that she’s not meant to look like a 20 year old; but yet she wants to feel like she looks good for her age. I have so many patients that tell me similar stories about their spouse not being on-board with anti-aging treatments. My own husband is like that. He thinks I’m beautiful just as I am…so why do I need to microneedle, or do a chemical peel, or put botox in my face? But here’s the thing…It’s not about him…it’s about me and how I feel about me.
I take my own self-care very seriously and if I start to be consumed by life and let myself fall by the wayside…I become not such a nice person. For that reason, I believe it’s important to take time to take care of ourselves. To do what makes us feel good. As women, especially those of us that are mothers, we tend to make everyone else a priority and put ourselves at the bottom of the list. Ladies, it’s time to add yourself to your “to-do” list. It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate or expensive. Maybe it’s taking an hour to sit down and read a book, exercise, get a massage, mani/pedi, or meet a friend for lunch. I understand that time and money can limit what we’re able to do. So, get creative. Buy nail polish and paint your nails, find a fun recipe and invite your friend over for lunch, or go to Sephora or Ulta and get a hydrating face mask for $5. The point is…do something everyday, no matter how small, to make you feel like your best self. When you feel good about yourself it will carry over to every other aspect of your life.
