If you are new to running, sore muscles are on your mind. Why do we get sore muscles and how we deal with them is different from person to person? As a runner, I usually get sore muscles when it’s hot out and I run a long distance. In general, usually, my quads are screaming after a hilly hot run. The question always pops up the next day, do I run or rest? This is always a personal choice. I generally will do a recovery run or walk based on the amount of soreness. If can go down the stairs with little pain, I’ll hit the roads and work out some of the lactic acids. If the stairs are a challenge, rest I my primary choice. Having muscle soreness may mean there is microscopic damage to your muscles or a buildup of lactic acid from a change in your exercise routine. My advice is to find an alternate activity such as riding a bike, swimming, lifting, or simply walking. In a way, I like knowing I worked hard and extended outside of my normal zone, but I also advise you to listen to your body when moving forward. Whatever you decide, just remember there are alternatives to running that can satisfy your need to move.
