Summer Running

It’s summer running time! If you are like me running in the heat, can be more than exhausting. Just how do you run with the heat and humidity? Here are some tips that make it tolerable. Hydrate as much as possible before a run. Keep in mind, water will not be enough. Due to the humidity and the amount your body will sweat you will need to incorporate and electrolyte into your routine. My favorite is Propel but there other that are good but I caution you to watch the sugar content. Look for low calorie or low sugar options as you don’t want to consume more calories than you are burning. Next, wake up early! In the summer, I try to get my runs done by 9 am. I am really caught out there beyond that timeframe because the sun and heat can be punishing for my body. Next, consider water/drink breaks during the run. During the summer months, I simply stop more. I would love to run continuously but my body needs replenished. It’s good to rehydrate every 3 to 4 miles. Finally, make sure your gear works for you. Go for lightweight materials that are breathable. Keep in mind your clothes will be soaked from sweat, you want to make sure the materials do not rub on your skin. Also, your body will be working to sweat all the fluids out so keep your clothes loose fitting and light. Keep the sunglasses handy as well as a hat (if you can tolerate it). Lastly, don’t forget the sunscreen but make sure it’s for an active body and protects with a high SPF. None of this will make you cooler but it’s sure to help you get through the run.
