Talk it out with yourself!

Running requires motivation to move forward. How do you motivate yourself? As a runner sometimes, I think of the race I have planned or the calories I will burn which pushes me out the door. But have you thought about how self-talk can be used to motivate us into a run? Motivation to exercise can be influenced by external factors but we must consider that running can be used to process events in our lives. Think of it this way, have you ever had a confrontation with a coworker, an argument with your spouse, or even felt frustrated about situations. So, how do you process these events? By using self-talk on a run often helps provide the time you need to process events in your life. For me, this is the most successful on a run. It’s during this time, that I can concentrate on myself and process my feelings. It truly is ME TIME! The best part is I then forget that I am running, and the miles just pass by. As we strive to be our best selves self-talk is a destressing practice that can help increase your mood and overall well-being. Next time you are on a run, use self-talk and see how you feel at the end of the run.
